This is a short blog post on using fakes after drives. As a student of the game, you must start paying attention to player tendencies. Defenders will time after time leave their feet and lose their balance when an offensive player uses a fake. This is the opportune time to then either step around the defender with a step through, or try to initiate contact with them to draw the foul and get to the free throw line. I don’t think player’s pay attention enough to how defenders will react to using fakes. In my opinion, players need to do a better job setting up their defender with fakes to create space/separation, but also deflate your defender by forcing them to commit fouls.
Steph Curry is one of the best in the league at creating separation in a variety of ways. I think one thing that he does extremely well, is to use fakes and get his defender off balance. Once ou can master the art of doing that, your game will go to the next level. In the clip that I showed, Steph changes direction in the pain and immediately gets his ball ready to shoot, knowing that Anthony Davis will go for the fake and open up his step through move to create a window to finish.
I can’t state enough how undisciplined most defenders are, especially in the paint. They will over react to offensive players, and will leave their feet in a heat beat. Take advantage of this, as it works at every level.
