DALLAS MAVERICKS SCOUTING REPORT
SCREEN/ROLL COVERAGE
REPORT
Both Doncic and Irving can be attacked. Kyrie can get steals as he has great hands and feel, but puts little effort into getting stops. They will pressure the ball and funnel it to Lively(Game Time Decision With Nose) or Gafford. Doncic also doesn’t want much to do with pressuring the ball and getting out to guard. He will be motivated at times to guard and pressure the ball. Lively, Gafford, and Kleber are high level shot blockers at their position and are very smart when it comes to defending and keeping ball handlers in front of them. Lively is the best true shot blocker that they have, as Gafford and Kleber are better weak side and chase down shot blockers. Use your screeners and move the ball. They are pretty effective in their coverages, but don’t rotate well when the ball is swung. Attack them off the dribble and kick out to shooters. They will give up 3PT shots. Gafford does a good job at getting in front, but doesn’t block many shots vs ball handlers that attack in Screen Rolls. He is more of a weak side shot blocker. Exum and Hardaway give very good effort on the ball. Washington can be driven on and will go for fakes. Not the highest of energy guys and not a huge threat.
SCORING ON THEM IN SCREEN ROLL
REPORT
Scoring on Dallas is all about driving their guards. Luka and Kyrie don’t want to spend a lot of energy on defense to save it to shoot 25 times each on the other end of the floor. Force Luka to work with driving him into screens. The guy is a motherfucker and can score in a million ways, but trying to wear him down getting him screened as much as possible as well as showing some effort trying to stay in front of you. They switch a lot so probably won’t do much on the defensive end. Even with Lively(GTD) and Gafford, I think they can be driven. Kyrie will wave the white flag if he matches up with you defensively. I think you will have pull up, floater, and drive kick opportunities in their coverages. Powell is a good team defender, but not a shot blocker. Spread them out, line them up and attack the rim. Keep the ball moving and keep them moving. I think Doncic/Irving will foul bump them on drives be physical and don’t back down. Like I mentioned before, Gafford & Kleber are very good weak side shot blockers , but not as good when ball handlers attack them in coverage and shoot floater or shots at the rim. Hardaway/Exum/Hardy give good effort , but aren’t high level defenders. When setting ball screens with Vic be ready for quick catch and shoot the floater before Lively/Gafford can rotate over.
OPENINGS FOR 3 POINT SHOTS
REPORT
They give up a ton of drive/kicks. Corner 3 Point shots are wide open. Get the ball in the paint and kick it back out. I think if the ball moves you will get 2-3 spot up corner 3point shots. In transition get to your spots early. If I had to guess they will go under on your scree/rolls. Make them pay with at least 2 attempts when they do this. They will put multiple defenders on the ball time and time again so if the ball moves there will be tons of opportunity. Be patient an move the ball against them as they will give up a lot of spot up 3PT shots on ball reversal. Mid Screen/Roll drives to corner 3PT shots are a weakness as well. With Doncic/Irving as on ball defenders, opponents live in the paint when they aggressively drive them.

OFFENSE
REPORT
Heavy Isolation and screen/roll. The fucking kid is a magician when it comes to making any type of shot imaginable. Gets to the line 10 times a game. You will see 5-6 stepbacks a game and he will try to bully you with backdowns in the post. If I had total control on how you would guard him, I would say pick him up 94 feet he fucking hates that. It won’t shut him down, but it will not only irritate him, but it will wear him down. You have to have total restraint when guarding him. Stay on your feet with his snapbacks and contest every shot. Most defenders dont have the mental toughness to stay on their feet. The kid is going to find a way to score points, the question is can you get him to do it while shooting 30%. Contest every shot, don’t lunge at anything and stay on your feet. He will take tough shot after tough shot so just contest it and show hands on drives. In the past he will back you down and turn quickly make sure your hands are springing up when he turns to shoot. Stay Solid as a fucking rock when defending him. Shoots 70% at the rim making him one of the top finishing PG’s in the NBA. Don’t let his shit talking and antics get under your skin. Be a soulless robot against him. If he scores agains you 5 times in a row, just keep doing the same thing. Don’t leave your feet, contest everything, and make very few lunging movements towards him. Keep physical, take his hits, but don’t give him the satisfaction of holding or fouling unless he has you beat and stopping him from a free score.
TURNOVERS
REPORT
He’s a fucking cyborg. He tends to turn the ball over by being lazy or out of frustration. On a lot of his turnovers teams send multiple defenders at him and plays very physical with him. Pick him up in the backcourt as much as possible and play him close. Force him to turn multiple times in the backcourt and chest him up. He will extend his arm on drives when he gets frustrated and will barrel in on drives. Just play him solid and pester the fuck out of him.

Offensive juggernaut. Shooting close to 50% from the field and 41% from the 3PT line. One of the best finishers int he NBA that can drive right & left and finish with either hand. Make everything hard for him. Play him the same way I told you to play Luka, by getting to his hip forcing him to one direction. Every shot needs to be contested and you can’t leave your feet. He does a great job of using fake after drives to get defenders off their feet to get to the line or step through for floaters/jumpers. I would pressure him 94 feet and turn him in the backcourt like I said to do with Luka. He will play off the ball, obviously with Luka, but will get his chances with screen roll & Isolations. Over dribbles, gets defenders to lean/lunge and takes advantage of it. Finishes at the rim at 60%. Wear him out with great ball pressure , staying attached, and showing hands on every inch of his drives. Stay solid and make it hard for him. Mentally tough and stay focused at the task at hand.
TURNOVERS
REPORT
Low Turn Over guy and has an A/TO of 3.17. Only way to turn him over besides him just making a mistake on a decision is by over dribbling , staying solid and having him mis time a bass or get deflected. Show him hands on all of his drives. In Screen/Roll active hands on his pocket passes.

Spot up shooter, straight lined driver. Improved offensive player. Very good catch and shoot offensive player, shooting 40% from 3PT. Uses fakes a lot to open up mid range pull ups as well as rim finishes. Not a great isolation player that can go off script to create offense. Off ball, know where he is and stay on your feet contest shots.Play up on his catch and force him one direction. Favorite move is drive out of the corner middle and then behind back/change direction to the baseline for finish. Keep hands up on drives and just force him to shoot over your contested hand on every pull up. Chest up on his drives and force him into the help. He’s not good at finishing over the help. Stay connected on his drives and bring him into your help (Vic/Cold Play)
TURNOVERS
REPORT
Low Turnover guy, doesn’t get out of the box offensive player. Active hands on drives try to get a deflection out of him. Not a super high IQ guy when he tries to over dribble, tends to make a mistake here and there. No swipes or mental mistakes on holds. Force him to overdribble if given the opportunity. He is not built to be an ISO go to guy. When he tries to do this a mistake will be coming.

Listed as out with a knee issue. Most of his offense comes from spot ups and straight line drives. Much improved shooter 47% from 3PT. Contest his shots, stay on your feet on his fakes. Nothing easy and open from him on the perimeter. Doesn’t do a great job finishing over help defenders. Not an ISO guy or creator. They get him on drive/kicks or drive kick straight line drives.
TURNOVERS
REPORT
Not a strong ball handler. If he drives on you, or you are off the ball and he drives in your direction make a swipe he tends to get his ball deflected/swiped on his drives. Force him to over dribble and create. Not built for that.

King the contested shot. Loves to over dribble and get to a fade away mid range shot. Improved shooter at 37% from 3PT , which is Steph Curry Numbers compared to how he shot it the ball last year. Loves to drive left and get back to his right on ISO’s and Screen and Roll. He is extremely streaky and has gotten hot at times. Don’t go for any fakes. Force him to take those tough contested shots that he loves. Contest his spot ups. Average finisher at best. Show hands on drives as he loves to bump and initiate contact.

Pop up jump shooter. Shoots himself into/out of games , mostly out of games. Low Basketball IQ that flames out with his addiction to taking tough shots. Don’t go for any fakes and stay on your feet. Just make sure everything is contested. Low efficiency player, because he refuses to play simple. Best spot to operate from is the right corner, as he’s shooting almost 50% from that spot. Loves to fake and shoot off the dribble in mid range. Force him to put the ball on the floor and over dribble. He will self disturb the more he isolates and tries to create.
TURNOVERS
REPORT
Dribbles himself into oblivion at times. Not a huge turnover guy, but his turnovers come from him dribbling the ball excessively. Play to his ego let him think he can do that. I would trust me unattended in an ice cream truck than him being an ISO scorer.
