NEW ORLEANS PELICANS SCOUTING REPORT
SCREEN/ROLL COVERAGE
REPORT
Heavy switching team. Daniels is their best perimeter defender as he is active and into the ball. He does a very good job getting through screens to contest shots in rear view challenges or getting back in front to kick the big out of the coverage. NO big time shot blocker, Valanciunas will be active in coverage and contest a lot. He is their best shot blocker at 1.1 Blocks per game and is active on the glass rebounding as well as chasing the ball when needed. Ingram is active as a defender using his size and length to challenge shots at a pretty high rate. McCollum is their weakest link as far as guarding screen and roll is concerned. The ball needs to move and you have to be aggressive with your drives as well as being disciplined not to settle for jumpers with this team. Multiple penetration kicks and get right back into not only ball movement , but player movement as well. I think there will be opportunity to attack the rim and finish. Nance is smart and active in coverage, especially with switching onto ball handlers. They are a disciplined group defensively.
SCORING ON THEM IN SCREEN ROLL
REPORT
When you spread them out deeper with your screening they have a hard time containing the ball in pick and roll. Valanciunas struggles keeping those ball handlers in front of him. The deeper the screen is set the harder it is going to be for them to stop you. As you can see in the film , Valanciunas struggled keeping the ball handler out of the paint. I would line him up over and over until they have a completely different plan. The ball can’t stick and it has to move. They do guard, and have so many interchangeable players to switch Luke Murphy, Jones, Ingram, and Nance to name a few. Ingram is better than I thought defensively and gives a good effort. Multiple penetrations in the paint and kick outs, force them to scramble out on aggressive drives. Keep your dribble in play and take it to the rim. If you don’t make Valanciunas move his feet he will be a shot blocking threat. If you get him moving , he is much less dangerous for protecting the rim. Penetrate and kicks are there for 3PT shots. Keep the ball moving and stay aggressive on drives.
OPENINGS FOR 3 POINT SHOTS
REPORT
There will be 3PT looks on deep screens with the big in the paint. Move the ball and spread them out. They will give up 3PT shots against aggressive teams that get to spots quickly and keep the ball moving. I think you can get 3PT looks on hand offs and screen and roll as well. If your team moves the ball they can get looks. They are aggressive defensively , but are open for 3PT shots if the ball keeps moving and doesn’t stick.

Expect a healthy number of screen rolls, pin downs, and hand offs. Very effective from deep, shooting 43% from 3PT and gets them off quickly. Be careful of him entering the ball into the post and relocating. Always moving without the ball to sprint out to a hand off or coming off of a pin when you least expect it. Doesn’t finish great, only 49%, but shoots the floater at 55% and is super aggressive trying to get to it. Push up on screen rolls , stay on your feet, and contest everything. No lunging, keep him going one direction. Limit his 3PT looks and bring him into your help to force him over length. His game is fueled on the deep ball. Force him to be a greater off the dribble taking a majority of shots contested and deep into the paint.
TURNOVERS
REPORT
He struggles being a playmaker. When he’s forced into deep drives he leaves his feet a lot which gets him in trouble. Makes simple plays and he is good with that, but once you force him into being a playmaker he throws the ball anywhere. Get on bishop on drives and show him hands that is where you can get deflections or force him into mistakes. Stay on the ground, only swipe when you know you can get to the ball. Force him into deep drives into the help, stay on his hip.

Mid Range Assassin. Expect a heavy amount of screen/roll, spot ups, and post ups. Loves to get to the elbows that is is go to kill spot. Uses his body with bumps and illegal elbows the whole night. Most of his 3PT shots will come on spot ups from the left elbow, but he does a decent amount of spotting up off of McCollom/ZIon/Valanciunas. Stay connected and sell the contact on the elbows and bumps. Loves to back down his defender into the post are for fade aways and turn arounds. He uses the fake a lot to open up drives. Stay on your feet and do not go for ANY fakes. He will try to post you up without question. Take the hit and use your forearm, but be ready to show both hands immediately when he turns quickly as he will try to sell contact and get to the line. Best thing you can do with him is stay on your feet, contest everything, and try to get under him to get to his ball with quick hands. I would pick him up full court and force him to put the ball on the floor. He’s not a strong ball handler I would pester the shit out of him. He’s a little fucking nuts he is from Kinston,NC. The elevator doesn’t go to the top floor with those mother fuckers. Jerry Stackhouse,Reggie Bullock, Ingram, and a list of others. He gets frustrated easily. Pressure and push up on him. High Level finisher at the rim 65%.

He’s very loose with the ball especially on passes. You can get deflections on him. Mostly he will throw those illegal elbows and get called for it. When he gets frustrated and people guard him close he tends to throw them. Sell the contact but stay close to him and force him to over dribble. He will make mistakes. Like I said in the last segment I would pick him up full court and frustrate the fuck out of him.

Mostly a spot up player that is lookin g to cut or come off hand offs for drives. This motherfucker looks like a Simpsons Character that they haven’t released to the public yet. He plays hard and will cut out of that corner off ball on screen roll so be aware of that. Physical on drives and crafty with his finishes. Above average finisher at 58% at the rim. Only shooting 28% from 3PT and 18% in the last 10 from 3PT , but his shot doesn’t look that bad and don’t give him all day to shoot. They play him in the dunker at times or he will drive kick and get to the dunker. The only spot on the floor that he only mildly sucks shooting the ball instead of totally sucking at is the right corner. He comes off those hand offs hard and changes speeds on his drives. Stay connected on his hand offs I would try going under and see if he will shoot to gauge him. Only shoots 65% from the FT Line. Good size, physical, will crash the offensive glass.

Spot up player, expect him to get 4-6 3PT shots off on ball reversal, double downs on Valanciunas in the Post, and drive kicks. Gets his shot off quickly. They like to bring him off hand offs up top. Mostly looking for 3PT shots , but can take the ball 1-2 dribbles for pull ups. Average finisher at best shooting 49% at the rim so he is looking jumper from deep or pull up 1-2 dribbles. Uses fakes a lot to step up side steps and mid range pull ups. Know where he is at all times off the ball do not leave him open. They won 1 play to him where he will be on the right wing he will throw it to the corner/break area and then cut like he is going to the rim , but will circle around the big up top to get it back almost the same spot he passed It from.
TURNOVERS
REPORT
Not a strong ball handler can get tipped or deflections on passes. Not a high turnover player but will get the ball stripped from either his defender or off ball defender swiping at him. Just be aware.

Spot Ups and Screen Rolls, mostly off the ball. He is in the game for energy on the defensive end and in transition. Mostly just spots up off of Ingram/Zion/Valanciunas. 39% 3PT shooter, not a good finisher. Has a decent floater and uses fakes to open up the drive to get to it. Finishing at 48% at the rim. Make sure you contest and get a hand up while staying on the ground.
