UTAH JAZZ SCOUTING REPORT
SCREEN/ROLL COVERAGE
REPORT
One of the only bright spots in their screen /roll coverage is Walker Kessler. He’s one of the best rim protecters in the NBA, not only with his ability to block shots (2.7 Per Game), but also in his positioning and just contesting/altering shots. You need to know where he is at all times on the floor as he comes out of nowhere. When Collins is their 5 he gives effort, but not a shot blocker and can definitely be scored on. They switch a lot, with Markkanen at times and he DEFINITELY can be scored on. They’re better on the ball defenders are Keynote George and Kris Dunn. Both players get into the ball and give very good effort getting through screens and contesting shots. Clarkson gives good effort at the point of the screen, but gives up after the second dribble , opening up his stance and allowing drives. They do a decent job as a team in the initial coverage, but all goes to shit once the first pass is made. Hendricks is active and gives them some activity in the paint on the help side, but this defense definitely has their holes in it as I will cover in the next section.
SCORING ON THEM IN SCREEN ROLL
REPORT
Not only one of the worst screen and roll defensive teams in the league, but overall defensive as well. Their on ball defense is brutally bad. If Sexton or Clarkson get matched on you it has to be a green light to attack. Sexton will die on most screens and drives, has zero heart on defense. The most he will do is contest a shot half assed. With Clarkson he will give effort but after the second dribble he dies in coverage. Kessler does a great job protecting the rim, but when he is deep in drop will give up a ton of mid range shots. If you bring him out by setting a deep screen and roll inside of half court he gives up shots at the rim when he has to chase it down. Any switching with Collins or Markkanen is a total green light to attack. They give up a lot of mid range shots as well as 3PT shots (That is another fucking story we will cover in the next section). This is a team that you can be VERY aggressive with looking for scores in screen roll. They give effort but just don’t get the job done.
OPENINGS FOR 3 POINT SHOTS
REPORT
They are 30th in the league at giving up 3PT shots (14.5) and 29th in 3PT FG% giving up 39.5%. You name it, and they give it up. Pick your poison, You want Drive & Kicks?? They Give it Up… Ball Movement Swing Swings??? They Give It Up… Passes out of the Post?? (NOBODY ON YOUR TEAM PASSES OUT OF THE POST) They Give IT Up… Transition 3’s??? They Give It Up… They are 30th in the League at Assists from Opponents. Move the ball and there will be plenty of 3PT shots given up. I think you should be locked and loaded for spot up 3PT shots, Transition Looks, and on ball defenders dying on screens.

OFFENSE
REPORT
Aggressive and very streaky offensive player. Expect a high number of Screen and Rolls and Spot Ups when playing off of Sexton/Clarkson. Takes a lot of hard contested looks and that is the main reason why he is shooting 39% from the field and 34.5% from 3PT. He will shoot a lot of pop up jumpers off of screen roll/hand offs. Good both right & Left. His hot side of the floor is the left side especially from the left corner shooting 53% (10/19) They drive and kick to him a lot as a spot up player he isn’t bad. He gets out in transition looking to attack and score. You have to take space away from him. I was around him for 6 weeks during pre draft. He is a talented kid , but complete mental midget. If you pick him up full court and frustrate/turn him he will lose his shit. He’s one of those guys that the elevator doesn’t go up to the top floor if you know what I mean. When he is comfortable and defenders let him get to spots easy he can settle in and have big games. If you get into him and body him up legally while showing hands he tends to implode. Contest everything, stay on your feet, and show hands at every move.
TURNOVERS
REPORT
If there was ever a movie made about him they would name it “The Prequel to Jordan Poole: Takes 3 Hours to Watch 60 Minutes Story” You have to frustrate him. He talks to himself and short circuits when he gets frustrated. One of those dudes who literally talks to himself and starts crying when stuff doesn’t go his way. Sort of like watching a toy robot when you pour water on it. Don’t let him turn you, keep him one direction and show hands. He pops up quickly so always have hands off your sides. Don’t go for fakes. Watch where he is off the ball for quick catch and shoot.

Scores in a variety of ways. Very efficient shooting 48% from the field , 39% from 3PT and shoots 87% from the line. Expect a lot of screen rolls, Spot Ups, and ISO’s. Aggressive with the ball loves to snake on screen and roll as they set those ball screens deep out to get him plenty of space to pull up. Good finisher , shooting 60% at the rim. Changes speeds very well and looking to attack. Shoots a lot of 3PT shots off of the dribble. I think you need to pick him up deep out and force him to pick his dribble up and frustrate him. Strong, initiates contact on his drives so you have to show hands at all times. He gets to the line 5 times a game, focus on staying on your feet and forcing him to shoot over your contested hand on all shots. He will put his head down and look to get to the rim. Don’t bail him out by lunging or leaving your feet.
TURNOVERS
REPORT
Keep him dribbling. He’s not wild with the ball, but if hets too deep into the clock and starts over dribbling to get a driving angle just stay on your feet and show hands. When he doesn’t get an easy angle and starts pounding it he tends to try to make a play that isn’t there as far as passes go. In the clips that I watched, he tends on the right wing drive baseline and get caught under the basket a lot and tends to lead to a turnover. Not every time, but it happens more than you would think. Just stay down , active, and keep this hands off your sides!!

Professional scorer. Scores in a variety of ways. Mostly off the dribble in Screen Rolls/Isolations/ Straight Line Drives. They run him off pins, mostly on the right side of the floor. One of the best floaters in the NBA shooting 51% using it. Watch for them running him off a flare in transition off of his first pass. Average finisher, shooting 51% at the rim. Mostly wants to get to his pull up game. Stay on your feet on his fakes. He can score, but not very efficient as he is very much hot and cold. Only shooting 29% from 3PT , but will keep shooting them. No lunges, stay solid , and contest everything.
TURNOVERS
REPORT
Low IQ decision maker. Not an accurate passer, and every time he tries to make plays for others it doesn’t go well for him. Have active hands, not a strong ball handler. You can get steals from him just and force turnovers. Get him dribbling and force him to be a decision maker. He will turn

Mostly a spot up and screen/roll scorer. Mostly operates out of the left corner on spot ups. They use him as a screener on ball to slip out to get a shot or catch and drive. Solid finisher at 60% at the Rim. Force him into contested loos off of the dribble. Stay solid like you usually do. Don’t go for fakes as he is effective on straight line drives.
TURNOVERS
REPORT
Not a high turnover guy. Makes some bad decisions in screen and roll, but doesn’t struggle with one specific thing. Stay solid and keep your hands off your sides.

Tough player looking to score. Screen Roll Spot Ups mostly. Sneaky athlete that changes speeds well and can get to the rim. Below average shooter at 33% from 3PT, but keeps shooting them. Not very quick , but crafty. Statistically they say he drives mostly left, but in theist few games the motherfucker drive nowhere, but right. Not a strong ball handler I would pressure the shit out of him and put maximum pressure on him. His role has changed in the last couple of weeks playing up and down minute wise. Stay connected to him and force him to over dribble. Average finisher at 53% at the rim. Show hands and don’t bail him out on drives by reaching.
