WASHINGTON WIZARDS SCOUTING REPORT
SCREEN/ROLL COVERAGE
REPORT
Washington deos a poor job with their guards containing the ball on screen roll.I think there is a lot of opportunity to get in the paint and do damage against them. The big question for them is who their Starting Center is going to be. They funnel everything to Gafford who is without question their best shot blocker. I think if your screening is solid you can have opportunities going to the rim, especially if Gafford plays the coverage higher giving him more ground to cover in the coverage. You have to force Tyus,Jordan, Landry into screens and force them to fight through. They don’t do a great job of taking the hit of the screen and gettin back in the play. A lot of off ball spot up opportunities. Like most NBA defenders they lack vision off the ball to spot their man off the ball for spot ups on Screen/Roll and Hand Offs. Force your bigs to screen and get hits and you can build up a lead and never look back. As of now Gafford is a Game Time Decision. If Bagley is the Starting Center he is more lumbering and less of a defensive presence than Bagley is. Bagley can rebound and takes up space but cant chase you down and protect the rim like Gafford Can. Use your fakes after drives and make sure you change speeds and directions against Bagley. Not the brightest bulb on the tree(Yes I know He’s a Duke Guy , but come on…..)
SCORING ON THEM IN SCREEN ROLL
REPORT
Attack their on ball defenders and be physical. Bump them at the point of the screen to get an advantage and then attack the paint. There are a lot of holes in their defense. Poole doesn’t want to guard, Jones doesn’t handle being screened great, and the off ball defenders lack focus. You can get in the mid range to get open looks, there are looks off the ball when they ball watch to get to a spot up 3 in the corner. If Gafford plays you have to bump him and be physical. Keep your late passing options open when Gafford engages with you at the rim. You can use your floater, just make sure there is less than 0.00003 on the shot clock when you shoot it to make your people happy lol I think Hand Offs and Scene Rolls with Vic will be hard for them to stop especially if they try to go under. I want you to keep your dribble alive and if they try that bullshit of going under shoot it. Every game is a test to get better with being more aggressive with your shot selection while keeping it in a winning way.
OPENINGS FOR 3 POINT SHOTS
REPORT
I think there is a ton of opportunity to get 3PT looks against this team, especially off the ball. Get to your spots early and d your shot prep early. They do a terrible job off the ball of knowing where their man is and you can get a ton of looks. Issue with this philosophy is your teammates need to penetrate and actually kick the ball out. If you guys move the ball they will give up a ton of looks. Stay aggressive and engaged off the ball. If the ball moves and your teammates are aggressive with attacking the paint and drawing the second defender it will be a lot of great looks. If they ISO to death and force bullshit up you’ll be back in the 80’s getting 3 open 3PT looks.

One of the most efficient PG’s in the league as far as shot selection, finishing, and executing. Will run most of his offense out of scree/roll usually out of the Mid, as well as spotting up with those 2 Ball Hogs that make Vic seem like he’s John Stockton. Has much better rhythm going left than right. His floater is one of the league’s most efficient shooting 56% with it which is unheard of. Shoots the floater as far as attempts per game second to only Trae Young. Shooting 51% from the field , over 40% from 3PT, yet only 73% from the FT Line. Doesn’t shoot a ton of 3PT shots wants to get to the paint . Too good of a shooter to go under to keep him from paint. I would play up on him, stay on his hip, and force him to make plays in the paint with you on his hip and over Vic’s length. I would take the ball out of his hands and make him pass to Poole or Kuzma. Poole is shooting the ball these days like he sees 3 Rims and is aiming for the one on the left. He needs to see hands constantly. Stay on your feet on’t go for that shoulder fake going left that he gets defenders with to get in the paint to ge too his floater.
TURNOVERS
REPORT
Very low turnover guy. There is no perfect way to play him as he usually makes the safe play. Most of his turnovers are when he is indecisive on deep drives and tries to make plays at the end instead of shooting. Or coming off screen and roll and trying to pass inside out to a spot up player cross court. Go for zero fakes. Stay on the ground show hands on every drive and stay connected. Only way he turns it over is if one of his teammates drops a pass or miss times something.

Expect a heavy dose of spot ups, hand offs , and pin downs. He is they best shooter on their team because of the way he can get his shots off of not only spotting up, but also on the move, and can put it on the floor into a deep shot. Have to stay connected to him on pin downs and hand offs to put the ball on the floor into help. Every shot is contested, and you need to know where he is at all times when he is off the ball.he can get to his stepback going baseline as well as handle the ball in small doses in pick and roll. He is a good outlet if either Kuzma or Poole dribble off their foot on their 19th dribble of an ISO going nowhere lands in Shamet’s hands.

Solid PG, has been hurt half the season but making his way back In the rotation. Will be in mostly mid pick and rolls and will spot up off the ball. Likes to drive kick and space or just spot up for shots and drives. Doesn’t have. a lot in the tank as far as drives and getting to the rim is concerned. Solid deep ball threat, but doesn’t get many up. Low turnover guy didn’t want to waste time watching turnovers when he isn’t a big T.O. player. Stay on his hip and show hands. He has size at 6’5 and will backdown and try to bump on drives so be careful of that. Keep him out of the middle of the floor and stay on your feet. Don’t go for any fakes that will open up drives for him
TURNOVERS
REPORT
One of the more lower turnover rotation players in the NBA in the last ten years. For someone who doesn’t have a strong handle, he finds a way to protect it. He’s a weak ball handler at times where a lot of off ball players strip him on drives. Be on the lookout of him driving when you are off the ball. Show him hands and try to get into his ball when you feel fit. He doesn’t like being pressured for long periods of time so if you can pick him up in the backcourt he will be more inclined to make a mistake.

One of the lowest basketball IQ guys as far as shot selection that I’ve seen in a long time. Just takes terrible shots and has no feel for what is a good shot, winning play, etc. Can heat up quick without question. Always looking to attack and create a driving angle. Will look to score on Screen Rolls, Spot Ups, Hand Offs, and Pins. Seems to turn almost everything into an ISO using the dribble. Most of his drives to mid range or 3PT shots ends in a stepback. Stay on your feet with everything because he likes to stepback and keep his dribble alive for a drive. He will turn most of his shots into off balanced tougher shots than they supposed to be. Just stay on the ground, keep him off the free throw line, and bring him into your help. Stay attached, although I would entice him to shoot 3 Point Shots and play him to his drive to make him less effective. Above average finisher, sets a lot of his drives up to the rim off flakes. Every shot needs to be contested. If you dont contest his shot he might pass it up and get it back to make sure you contest his shot while turning a 7 foot shot into a 35 foot off balanced stepback.

A lot like Ball or Levine where if you just stay attacked and don’t go for any fakes that you will wear them down into making mistakes. Surprisingly , Poole isn’t a high turnover player. He will give you some possessions where he will make you scratch your head and rethink what you know about basketball with the dumb shit he tries to do with his passes. Keep playing him close, showing hands, and don’t go for fakes. He will make mistakes just based on you being solid. He tries to make Social Media Viral Videos on every play which he is not built for that. Has an open invitation to Shaqing The Fool. Just stay solid and keep him out of the middle of the floor.

He is their Doug McDermott. He shoots the shit out of it and can get it off VERY quickly Probably not as accurate as Doug shooting the ball but he gets his shot off on spot ups and is ALWAYS moving. You have to know where he is at all times because he will not only spot up or sprint out for 3PT, but will do that Steph Curry where he passes the ball and continues to cut to the other side and come off another pin or hand off. Solid roll player that can shoot off the catch and can straight line drive as well. Finishes at the rim at 70%, which for a kid with his lack of physical gifts is pretty amazing for him. Stay connected to him, force him to put the ball on the floor and be a driver/playmaker. He struggles with that part of the game as you will see in the film below. Don’t turn your back when you guarding him off ball he likes to cut into the paint.
TURNOVERS
REPORT
Struggles with putting the ball on the floor. Off ball defenders will poke at him and he coughs it up. Keep an eye on that if you are off ball and can take a swipe at him. Also gets some cheap fouls pushing off when off the ball trying to get open. If anyone can piss him off it is you. Not an accurate passer and steps out a lot in the corners. Not a strong ball handler. Will straight line drive , will drive you if you trail him on cuts/or pin downs but in general not a strong ball handler.
